Built for a Phone

21 Aug 2026·4 min read

Every button is now big enough to press, every keyword explains itself when you tap it, and nothing gets cut off by the notch.

Most people who try this game will try it on a phone. The game was not built that way — it was built on a desktop, where a 28px button is a comfortable target and hovering over a word is how you find out what it means. Neither of those is true on a touchscreen.

This pass fixes that everywhere except one screen, which is called out at the bottom. No combat rules changed.

Keywords Explain Themselves on Tap

Skill and passive descriptions are full of highlighted mechanic words — Ignite, Pierce, Extort, and the rest. On a desktop you hover one to see what it does.

On a phone there was no way to see it at all. The explanation existed, it was attached to a hover, and a touchscreen has no hover — so the words looked meaningful and did nothing.

Tap any highlighted keyword now and its definition opens. The same applies to the arrows in passives, the resource counters in the top bar, and the reason a greyed-out button is greyed out. Hovering still works if you have a mouse.

Everything Is Big Enough to Press

The whole control set was resized against a 44px minimum — the size a thumb actually needs.

  • End Turn, Reset and the action slots in battle
  • Navigation — the route icons, the resource counters, the profile button
  • Summon, Claim, Rates and the milestone picker
  • The unit stepper and section tabs in a character's battle detail
  • Kit sections in the Archive, Bureau Orders, account controls

The volume slider and the Auto Clear run counter were 4px and 6px tall respectively. Both are now proper controls you can actually drag.

Nothing Hidden Behind a Wide Screen

Several things were only drawn once the screen got wide enough — which on a phone meant never.

  • A Bureau Order now shows what it pays on its own line, instead of only showing you the objective
  • The battle progress bar is always visible
  • The chapter you're fighting in appears on a tablet, not just a desktop
  • Your account rank bar shows at every width

Fits the Screen It's On

Full-height screens now measure the screen you can actually see rather than the one you'd have if the browser bars went away, so the phantom scroll at the bottom of a few pages is gone. Pop-ups do the same, so a long one no longer runs off the bottom.

The game also paints edge to edge on phones with a notch or a home indicator, and the buttons pinned to the bottom of a screen sit above the indicator instead of under it.

The Battle Screen, Rebuilt

Resizing wasn't enough here — the shape was wrong.

Hold a card to see what it does. Card descriptions used to appear on hover, which meant that on a phone there was no way to read a skill mid-fight at all. You played from memory.

Now a tap plays a card, and holding one opens its full description — power, effects, and what every mechanic in it means. Keep holding and a ring fills; when it completes, the card opens. Let go early and nothing happens, so a hold you change your mind about never costs you an action. Tapping a unit on the battlefield opens theirs the same way.

The control rail is gone. Speed and Skip stay where they were. Log, enemy details, team details and Exit now live behind a Controls button that opens a panel from the bottom of the screen. That gives an eighth of the screen width back to the fight.

Cards stopped shrinking. A full hand of eight used to squeeze each card down to about a thumbnail's width. Cards now hold their size and the hand scrolls sideways instead.

Merging is a tap. Press Merge on a card and its matching cards light up — tap the one you want. If there's only one match it merges immediately. Dragging still works.

Focus-fire is a real button. It was a 20px square wedged next to an enemy's name; it's now a proper target on the portrait itself.

One thing was removed: the single line under the battlefield that repeated the last action. The battle log has all of it, in order.
